The educational series “Informed” will be looking into the increasingly important topic of autism awareness. Although you may have heard the term autism in the media, you may not be sure what exactly it is. Join Rob Lowe as he speaks with experts in this field to bring you an in depth look into autism.
Autism is considered to be a spectrum disorder, which means that it covers a range of conditions that affect the person’s life. As an example, people who live with autism can have challenges in basic social skills, speech, non-verbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. Autism is one of the fastest growing diagnosed disorders in the United States today. The most recent figures indicate that autism affects 1 in 68 children annually, with 1 in 42 of those cases being male children.
At this time, there are no direct medical tests to detect autism and there’s also no direct cures for the disorder. Due to the fact that it is a spectrum disorder, this means that an individual afflicted with the disorder can fall anywhere on the scale. This means that one person can be highly functioning and lead a very normal life, while others may need constant care.
Staying up to date on the latest topics affecting our world is a key part of modern society. Make sure to tune into this episode from “Informed”, hosted by Rob Lowe, distributed to Public Television PBS Member stations.
